What’s a fox hunt?
NO, WE'RE NOT HUNTING ACTUAL FOXES...

TARC have been hosting Foxhunts since the beginning of 2026. Ok, so what’s a Foxhunt?
A Foxhunt has 2 different roles, the Fox and the Hunter. The Fox is a person who hides a tiny transmitter somewhere in a large area, say the entirety of Terrace.
The hunters track down the fox using a directional antenna, usually a yagi antenna. (as shown below, its that long thing with with the orange elements) Think of yagi’s as a flashlight, you can only ‘see’ what your pointing at, same with yagi’s. While a simple vertical (like the FM antenna on your truck) is like a lantern, it radiates in all directions. This way we can triangulate where the fox is by moving to a few different locations and getting a bearing! As the hunters get closer the signal strength increases. A common way to find the transmitter once you get close is to walk around until you find the strongest signal then you start looking, sometimes your standing on it!

Foxhunts usually take 1 hour and are great fun! TARC hold Foxhunts on the first sunday of each month, either in Kitimat or Terrace. Check our Facebook page for more info or email us if you want to particpaite!
